I was honored to be able to hear Ken IIgunas speak about his journey. It was a very powerful and motivating speech. Ken Ilgunas, lifelong traveler, hitchhiker, and roamer, takes readers back to the nineteenth century when Americans were allowed to journey undisturbed across the country. He is also a writer and an activist. He started off by posing a question about Climate Change. “How can you change it?”. And “What are you going to do to change it?”
His journey was through the Keystone XL pipeline. He got the idea with his friend, Liam, when writing his book in Denver. The Keystone XL pipeline is a 1,200-mile pipeline that will safely deliver crude oil from Canada and North Dakota to the United States. Traveling along the pipeline is very dangerous because you're not walking on the road, you walking on sand, and an open field with wild animals. You are also walking across private property, so any owner can say something to you or kill you because you are trespassing. You are also crossing over the different countries during a different time and the weather can be cold. Climate change and figuring out what our role as individuals should be in confronting something so big and so out of our hands.
Before he started, he prepared his food in boxes for along the journey. He made one of his friends ship them to where he is going to be the next week. He used a bus to get to his location and hitchhiked the rest of the way. He planned it out very well but ran into some problems. Such as weather issues and he got some blisters on his feet. Along the journey, he blogged about his trip, like what he saw what the environment was.
