People in the military do not see a lot of change in the way that their everyday lives are carried out. However, diversification is a huge change in standard ongoings for people in the military. Before the Civil War, many people would have never dreamed of a black regiment fighting for the United States. I’m sure many people didn’t know how to react to the, at the time insane, idea of the 54th being comprised of black soldiers. As one could expect, people tended to be very resistant to the change or simply did not know how to act. In the beginning of the film, Col. Shaw did not really know how to connect with his men. The culture of the free black men was so different than anything that Col. Shaw probably had ever experienced before.
The theme of the movie Glory is the many faces of racism, from slavery to unequal pay for black soldiers in the Union Army. They served to help the country they should be recognized no matter what color their skin is. It achieved a new dignity, self-respect, and militancy for the former slaves who fought for the Union. It helped them achieve equal citizenship and political rights—for a time—after the war.
One of the movie's most memorable scenes occurs the night before the assault on Fort Wagner, as various members of the regiment gather to sing songs, pray, and offer up words of inspiration. Glory also makes a point of showing how isolated Shaw is.
I feel like this movie gives a good historical view of it. That It is not only the first feature film to treat the role of Black soldiers in the American Civil War; it is also the most powerful and historically accurate movie about that war ever made.
